ABOUT JULIE MARKES
With a foundation in both fine art and photojournalism, I bring an artist's eye and a photojournalist's ability to all my assignments, from photographing important events in people's lives to families in their environment to professional headshots.
After earning my BFA in Photography from the University of Colorado at Boulder, I continued my studies at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. I then worked as a staff photographer for the Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press, where I developed a sharp eye for storytelling and learned to anticipate the moments that matter and document them with clarity and respect. Based in Brooklyn since 1997, I bring that same thoughtful, unobtrusive approach to every shoot.
For over twenty years I’ve been photographing B’nai Mitzvah at Congregation Beth Elohim, Kolot Chayeinu, Park Slope Jewish Center, Brooklyn Heights Synagogue, and other temples throughout Brownstone Brooklyn. My deep familiarity with these spaces and rituals allows me to move through these events with ease and sensitivity, ensuring the important moments are captured naturally and beautifully.
When you hire me, you can trust that everything is being thoughtfully documented. I’ll be there to quietly and attentively capture the emotion, beauty, and joy of the day — so you can be fully present and enjoy the celebration, knowing the moments that matter most won’t be missed. Years from now I want your photos to bring you back to the day and help you remember not just how everything looked, but how everything felt.
Whether you're celebrating a rite of passage or simply want to preserve a meaningful chapter in your life, I’d be honored to document your story through photographs that feel timeless, heartfelt, and true.
